March 4 - Menlo Park
Workshop: Dancing Inside the Music ~ How to Dance Like an Egyptian or
Any Other Arab
Leyla Lanty’s Monthly 2-Hour Workshops – Session #1
Menlo Gift Bazaar: 780 Santa Cruz Ave., Menlo Park, CA
Beginning on Sunday, March 5, 2012
1:30 – 3:30 pm
With these workshops under your belt, you need never be insecure about
dancing to Arabic music again! Workshops are aimed at student to
professional dancers who want to make their dance, choreographed or
improvised, express Arabic music in the moment, from within, no more
choreographies “simply by the rhythm.”
Session #1, Sunday, March 4, 1:30 to 3:30 pm (registration at 1:00 pm)
will concentrate on head, hands, arms, attitude, posture, traveling, and
more if there’s time. All workshops are a very affordable $25 at the
door.
Send email to leyla@leylalanty.com
for more information and to sign up for Leyla’s “Dancing in the Music”
workshops mailing list. There's plenty of free street parking. Following
workshops will be on the 1st or 2nd Sunday of each month.
Leyla: “I want to teach what I’ve learned from studies and workshops
with Egyptian master dance teachers over the last 20+ years, 7 years of
performing to live Arabic music for Arabs and hours of ‘just plain
dancing’ with Arabs from Egypt, Lebanon, Jordan, Palestine, Syria, Iraq
and other parts of the Arab world.”
Each session, Leyla will break technique down, body part by body part,
then put it all back together in its modified form so you can achieve an
Egyptian/Arabic look and feel in your performances. In this series of
workshops, you will learn:
* How to listen and dance to the music the way Arabs do, how to choose
dance movements, body language, gestures and expressions appropriate to
the different layers of Arabic music.
* How to dance to live Arabic music even if you've never heard the piece
before by improvising the way an Egyptian or other Arab dancer would
improvise.
* How to hear what's coming next in an Arabic music piece to make
improvising easier, based on typical structure of most dance songs and
compositions.
* How to modify your moves for raqs sharqi, folklore and shaabi styles.
* Rhythms for dancers and how to improve zill playing to coordinate with
the musicians.
* Arabic words and phrases useful for dancers to know.
What do native Arabs say about Leyla’s performances?
“That’s REAL Arab dancing!”, “If I did not know she’s not Egyptian, I
would think she IS Egyptian!”
“Leyla, THANK YOU!”

March 10-11 - San Francisco
Workshop: Debbie & Amina + more
Ala’ Wahda wa Noss:Musical Interpretation for
Oriental Dancers
Amina Goodyear and Debbie Smith bring you the seventh in their series of
workshops with a cultural context. Have you ever wondered what you were
dancing to? About the meaning of the song, or how to interpret the
music? How to make sense of the complex rhythmic changes and melodic
phrasing of Arabic music? Let two perpetual students of Egyptian Arabic
language, music and dance share their experience with you. In a weekend
of cultural exploration, two classic Arabic songs will be used as a base
for learning to listen to the words, the rhythms, the instruments, the
phrasing and more. You will also learn about the lives of the singers
and composers. Then we’ll move from theory to practice, with two special
dance classes that will use the same songs to illustrate two different
but complementary approaches to musical interpretation through movement:
improvisation and choreography. This workshop is suited for dance
students of all levels. Students will receive a packet with
translations, vocabulary, drum rhythms, and a CD.
Workshop Schedule:
Saturday, March 10: 10-5 (lunch break from 1-2 pm) at Amina's Studio
Amina and Debbie will introduce you to new tools for listening,
understanding and interpreting Arabic songs, by introducing the basic
structural elements of the music, and in-depth musical breakdown of the
composition and line by line translation of the lyrics and meaning of
each song. Guest artists Georges Lammam and Susu Pampanin will give you
a musician’s point of view on the important elements of the songs,
including an introduction to the Arabic maqam system and to the most
commonly heard rhythms. Both the overall structure of the selected songs
and their individual rhythmic and melodic elements will be introduced by
these master musicians.
Saturday night:
Video Party from 6-9 pm at Amina’s Studio (optional) at Amina's Studio
A look at the great soloists of Egyptian dance, to get an overview of
the diversity and range of personal expression in each dancer’s unique
interpretation of the music. Taken from an extensive collection of
videotapes, DVDs and recorded broadcasts, these treasures will bring the
class discussions to life.
Sunday, March 11: 11-4 (break from 1-2 pm) at Bisap Bollywood Studio
In this dance workshop learn how to add the movements and meaning to
your dance that will make it a truly “Egyptian” expression. Both known
for their deep understanding of Egyptian music and their interpretive
ability, Debbie and Amina will share their unique, individual uses
Oriental dance as a form of authentic expression through movement. Using
two different approaches, Amina and Debbie will each present a two-hour
class that explores in depth two contrasting ways of using
instrumentation, rhythmic changes, and personal expression to create
different moods within a performance. Amina will give you the tools to
learn the art of improvisation, a vital skill for the Oriental dancer,
and to create your own, highly individual response to the music. Debbie
will contrast this with a choreography that provides a more structured
framework for finding the musical and emotional heart of the music.
Extra - Sunday: 7 pm, Show at Pena Pachamama
$30 includes dinner, tax, tip & cover charge
Debbie, Amina and other local artists performing to the live Arabic
music of the Georges Lammam Ensemble (limited dance slots available) at
