Raks al Khalil (Dance of Friends)
Current class members honing our skills of dancing together and enjoying
each other's company while we practice or sew our own costumes.
The mixed level dancers are called Rakettes and the beyond beginner
dancers are called Rak Core, collectively we call ourselves Raks al
Khalil. Anyone is welcome to join our troupe so long as they are in the
classes and can commit to regular practices for a few months prior to a
big performance, the other commitment is to a costume that you will
learn how to make yourself at our separate sewing workshops (or you can
have me make it for you at a reasonable rate, I am a costume designer).
Dancing in a troupe can be a lot of work, it takes a great deal of
commitment in time and money, but its rewards are many. For me, troupe
dancing is my favorite part of the dance, it is challenging learning how
to move not only as one, but being aware of your placement within a
formation. Although I do most of the choreography, a special magic
happens as we learn it, make mistakes and discover better ways to make
it work. I love the road traveled rather than the destination and always
miss the process once we are done with a project.
